As you know, alarms have been around for years, so it’s no surprise many households and businesses still have the same system they installed years ago. I don’t need to tell you the importance of having a burglar alarm but just to make sure you fully understand, I want to share with you this stat I found recently. 81% of burglars have admitted that an alarm is enough of a deterrent for them to stop and to target a different home.

When should you upgrade your alarm system?

Your current system is over 10 to 15 years old

Some people believe that security systems are a once-in-a-lifetime investment and will continue to function correctly even without being regularly maintained, but this is not the case. They are similar to a home appliance in that they require maintenance or replacing / upgrading over time.

If your alarm is ageing, some of the sensors may not be working, even though they still appear to. You might also find the alarm doesn’t activate when it’s supposed to, or you are having numerous false alarms.

Most burglars’ can also recognise an older alarm system and are less likely to be deterred by them, some may even know how to dismantle them completely.

Your Alarm System Is Faulty

If your alarm system is old and was installed years ago, you may be experiencing faults which cause it not to work properly. Perhaps the sensors aren’t functioning, or it’s not activating as it should. You may think your old alarm system is working well, but in reality, the coverage isn’t that strong any more.

If you’ve had the same alarm system for a while, ask a professional to perform a maintenance check on it to see what’s really happening and if it’s still providing good coverage throughout your property. If there are any faults, they may be able to change parts, but it could also be time to consider an upgrade.

You Want Better Coverage

Sometimes, you’re happy with the system you have, but you now want more coverage throughout your property. Garden security measures have risen in recent times, especially with many homeowners using areas such as garages and sheds to store valuable tools and equipment.

Thieves are aware of this, and we’re seeing more and more incidences of garden break-ins. Therefore, you may want to upgrade your alarm package to provide extra security for these areas of the home.
